Employee e-bulletin
Each week, I sent the email newsletter Staff News to around 2,000 academic and support staff at Goldsmiths.
Throughout Spring term 2019, 1,474 staff read Staff News at least once, 372 people read all twelve issues and 875 people read at least every other issue. The average number of readers was 928 per issue – up 2.65% on the previous year. Furthermore, compared with 2018 the number of total links clicked per issue was up 38%.
Engagement continued to improve throughout 2020 as staff looked to the newsletter as a source of vital information during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The effectiveness of using Staff News to communicate with the university’s academics was occasionally questioned, when colleagues said it was only read by support staff. However, by comparing analytics reports for issues sent during Spring Term 2019, I was able to show that the opposite was true.
On average, more people in academic departments (579) read the e-newsletters each week than staff in support departments (329). While it was correct that a larger proportion of colleagues in support department read it (58% compared to 43% of academic departments), this was more than made up by the significantly greater number of staff in academic departments.

Insight was a fortnightly e-bulletin sent to academic and support staff at Kingston University. It was created using the online email marketing service Newzapp and featured links to longer stories housed on the University's intranet.
As well as canvasing stories from the faculties and departments, I designed the email template, wrote content and built the intranet news pages.
Insight was read by around two thirds of the University's 2,200 active employees. Some of the most popular features were profiles of staff, click on the links below to read examples.
The London based charity, Kids Company recognised that it needed to keep its volunteers better informed of the ways that it helps vulnerable young people, and different ways that the volunteers themselves can help the organisation. To this end, I produced a quarterly four page news bulletin which was emailed to volunteers in PDF format. For sample issues, click on the links below.
"Richard is extremely professional, he understood the sensitivities of working with a charity and understood the audience very well. I hope that I will be working with Richard again in the future."
